Faculty Comments

“Erilyn Brooks is extremely worthy of her award for Outstanding Senior in Zoology for 2022. One of her biggest experiences has been her job as a resident advisor( RA) at WSU. She works towards creating a safe and inclusive environment so that those transitioning into the WSU community feel welcome. She has also learned to deal with tough situations and problem solve.” –SBS Faculty

“I am thrilled to know that Erilyn’s caring nature, hard work, intelligence, and diligence is being recognized with the Outstanding Senior Award in Zoology. She has strong writing and oral communication skills and shows determination to attain her ultimate goal to become a veterinarian. Perhaps most importantly, however, Erilyn cares deeply for the welfare of people and animals. Her care and concern for the welfare of others inspired her to explore the topic of economic stress and homelessness among college students for a final group project in my class.

“For her Honors Thesis, Erilyn is exploring the question of how homeless or economically disadvantaged pet owners take care of their pets and what can be done to best assist people in this situation. Her research of current literature thus far has expanded her knowledge and compassion for these pet owners, which is sure to enhance her interactions with future such clients in the veterinarian career she hopes to pursue.” –Dr. Kathleen Boyce Rodgers

Personal Statement

“This has been a long yet short ride with most of my college experience happening online over Zoom. However, I am very grateful for the community and education I have gained from WSU. I would also like to thank my family and friends for helping me throughout this entire journey. I am excited to attend vet school in the fall and about becoming a veterinarian. Again, thank you and go Cougs!”

Future Plans

Erilyn plans to move to Arizona, begin working in the field, and perhaps open a cat sanctuary with her mom. She intends to pursue a veterinary degree and hopes to one day open her own clinic.
