Marisa Cervantes, doctorate student, and Jennifer Sherman, associate professor, sociology, presented “‘Isn’t That the Cycle?’ An Examination of the Intergenerational Transmission of Violence Among Low-Income Women” at the Pacific Sociological Association Annual Meeting in Long Beach, Calif.
Monica Kirkpatrick Johnson, professor and chair, sociology, was elected to the Executive Board for the Society for Longitudinal and Life Course Studies. She was also appointed chair of the Interdisciplinary Committee for the Society for Research on Adolescence.
Lindsey Beltz, doctoral student, sociology, was awarded a National Institute of Justice Graduate Research Fellowship to support her dissertation project “Assessing perceived effects of I-502: A survey on recreational cannabis in Washington State.”
Christine Horne, professor, sociology, authored “The conditionality of norms: The case of bridewealth” in Social Psychology Quarterly; and “Explaining Support for Renewable Energy: Commitments to Self-Sufficiency and Communion” in Environmental Politics. She also co-authored “How can consumer trust in energy utilities be increased? The effects of prosocial, proenvironmental, and service-oriented investments” in Organizations and Environment.
Lindsey Beltz, doctorate student, and Jennifer Schwartz, professor, sociology, presented “Trends in Female and Male Drunk Driving Prevalence over Thirty Years: Triangulating Diverse Sources of Evidence” during the section on Sociology of Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco at the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
Jennifer Sherman, associate professor, sociology, received the Rural Sociological Society’s Frederick H. Buttel Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award for a Book, 2018, for her co-edited volume Rural Poverty in the United States (Columbia University Press).
Don Dillman, Regents professor, sociology, was appointed by the Committee for National Statistics of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine to a steering committee for conducting a workshop on improving the American Community Survey. Dillman also was a guest professor at the Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (GESIS) In Mannheim, Germany; and he was an invited facilitator for the Australian Bureau of Statistics’s Workshop on Improving Data Collection Practices held in Melbourne.
Namrata Ray, doctorate student, sociology, presented “The Education-Occupation Nexus: Examining inter- and intragenerational mobility using India Human Development Survey” at the 4th Asian Population Association Conference in Shanghai, China. Ray’s participation was hosted and funded by the Asian Demographic Research Institute.
Monica Kirkpatrick Johnson, professor and chair, sociology, was invited to present at RC34’s session on “Youth in North America” at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association in Toronto, Canada. While there, Kirkpatrick Johnson also presented “Work Value Transmission from Parents to Children: Seeds That Sprout in Adolescence and Bear Fruit in Adulthood.” She also presented on behalf of herself, professor Christine Horne, and a colleague “The Conditionality of Adolescent Pregnancy Norms” at the Biennial Meetings of the Society for Research on Adolescence in Minneapolis.
Jennifer Schwartz and Erik Johnson, associate professors, sociology, presented “Sex Stratification in the Criminal Enterprise: Crimes Against the Environment” at the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology, Leiden University, Netherlands.
Schwartz and Johnson were also invited to present “Women’s and Men’s Participation in Business-related Crimes Against the Environment: Sex-stratification in the Criminal Enterprise” at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
