Alair MacLean, associate professor, sociology, WSU Vancouver, was elected chair of the American Sociological Association section on Peace, War and Social Conflict. She presented several papers at the ASA and Society for the Study of Social Problems annual meetings in Seattle, including “Historical Changes in the Context and Impact of Military Service” and “Started from the Bottom: Globalization, Welfare, and Cross-National Variation in Poverty and Inequality.”

Brian Stack, doctoral student, history, received the Western History Association’s Graduate Student Prize at its annual conference in Portland, Ore.
Wendy Dasler Johnson, associate professor, English, WSU Vancouver, authored Antebellum American Women’s Poetry: A Rhetoric of Sentiment (Southern Illinois University Press), which was nominated for four awards: Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book Award, the Journal of Rhetoric, Culture, and Politics Gary A. Olson Award, the Winifred Bryan Horner Outstanding Book Award, and the Rhetoric Society of America Book Award.
Jeff Vervoort, professor, environment, was named a fellow of the 
Dene Grigar, associate professor, English, and director, creative media & digital culture, WSU Vancouver, authored Traversals: The Use of Preservation for Early Electronic Writing to be published by MIT Press in early 2017. This summer, Grigar was re-elected pesident of the Electronic Literature Organization and chaired its 2016 conference and festival at the University of Victoria, BC. This fall, she will present the keynote address at the International Conference on Digital Media and Textuality at the University of Bremen, Germany, and at the International Digital Media Arts Association conference at Winona (Minn.) State University.
Peter Engels, professor, physics and astronomy, has been elected Fellow of the American Physical Society for pioneering experimental studies in superfluid hydrodynamics and other work in Bose-Einstein condensation.
Tabitha Velasco, doctoral student, English, authored the short story “Departures” in the Festival of the Pacific Arts anthology Local Voices; and her article, “The Sapin Sapin Generation,” appeared in Humanities Diliman by the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Velasco also presented at the University of the Aegean and International Small Islands Studies Association’s “Islands of the World XIV Conference 2016: Niss(i)ology and Utopia—Back to the Roots of Island Studies” in Lesvos, Greece, where she was honored with the ISISA 2016 student scholarship.
Rebecca Goodrich, clinical assistant professor, English, won the Dead Bison Editor’s Prize in nonfiction for her essay “Guns I Know,” which appears in Arcadia Magazine.
Michael Delahoyde, clinical professor, English, led a Shakespeare symposium in Ashland, Ore., focused on The Winter’s Tale, Twelfth Night and his recent research in Italy. Delahoyde also received a Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship to support his archival research in northern Italy in summer 2017.
Lori Wiest, CAS associate dean and professor, music, received the Washington Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association’s Leadership and Service Award at the group’s state conference in Tacoma.
