Investing in our future

Message from the dean

As the largest academic unit in the WSU system, the College of Arts and Sciences is a flurry of activity during the first week of classes: staff is back to full strength, faculty are in their classrooms and labs, and students are settling in on all of our campuses.

Enrollment at WSU continues to be strong and the college is taking steps to increase, improve, and invest in our teaching endeavors. For example, we increased the number of freshman English course sections, added new courses in several departments including anthropology and mathematics, and are investing in a Math Learning Center that will serve the entire Pullman campus.

I’m pleased to welcome more than two dozen new faculty members to the college this fall. They bring expertise in areas as diverse as the philosophy of science, environmental archeology, evolutionary genomics, and Irish literature. Collectively, they will help us serve the growing student population as well as augment and complement the outstanding work already happening in our research units.

Sharing news of our efforts and our accomplishments is an important component to the emotional and professional wellbeing of our college community. The new CAS Connect e-newsletter provides a way for us to highlight the mission and vision of the college in real terms. Our enduring values of inquiry, human and intellectual diversity, and service and outreach aren’t just concepts in a strategic plan—they are something we embrace and act on every day.

In addition to the newsletter, CAS News provides links to news stories about CAS faculty, staff, and students. You can sign up to receive updates via email or RSS feed, plus the most recent stories are featured on the college homepage.

The CAS Calendar is another wonderful central resource. It’s your one-stop-shop for public seminars, lectures, performances, student club activities, and other events happening across the college. Both the news feed and the central calendar are searchable by keyword and sortable by category.

I encourage you to read the newsletter and hope you take the opportunity to participate in CAS events throughout the year.

I look forward to sharing the exciting times ahead.
