While many units have been preparing their digital assets and webpages to comply with these guidelines, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA standards will also impact social media publication and usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Resources for Review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Any WSU employee who manages a social media account in any manner or fashion <strong>must be current<\/strong> on WSU Digital Accessibility Training, provided in Percipio. Social media managers must take the <a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/assessment\/\">Digital Accessibility Assessment<\/a> and requisite training through Percipio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This assessment and training will provide an overview of common accessibility issues and publication guidelines for social media content. Additional resources include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/\">WSU Digital Accessibility<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/documents\/2023\/10\/core-concept-check-sheet.pdf\/\">WSU Digital Accessibility Core Concept Check Sheet<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/core-concepts\/audio-video\/\">WSU Digital Accessibility Core Concepts: Audio and Video<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/guides\/social-media\/social-media\/\">WSU Social Media Accessibility Overview<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.section508.gov\/create\/\">GSA Section 508: Creating Accessible Digital Products<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/socialmedia.wsu.edu\/\">Social Media at WSU<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessibility Applications and Components<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several accessibility concepts that should be considered when posting or publishing WSU-affiliated social content:<\/p>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section wsu-spacing-top--medium wsu-spacing-after--xxmedium wsu-spacing-bottom--small\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color Contrast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreground text color and background color must have sufficient color contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Text has appropriate color contrast with the background and meets contrast ratio requirements (WCAG 2.1, level AA).<ul><li>For normal-sized (e.g., 12 point) text and images of text, the ratio is 4.5:1.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>For large text (over 18 point or 14 point bold), the ratio is at least 3:1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on colors and color contrast is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/core-concepts\/color-color-contrast\/\">WSU Digital Accessibility Core Concepts<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative Text on Images<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every image included in a social media post needs alternative text. A more in-depth image description adds context to the limited amount of text in the post. It is recommended to use the social media channel\u2019s tools to add the image description (alternative text) for the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information can be found at <a needed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>\u274c \u201cStudents in a classroom\u201d<br>\u2705 \u201cWSU students working together in a chemistry lab, wearing goggles needs\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section wsu-spacing-top--medium wsu-spacing-after--xxmedium wsu-spacing-bottom--small\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instagram-specific concerns:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several issues and practices specific to Instagram that should be reviewed and adjusted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>DO NOT post hyperlinks in the IG caption\u2014they are not linkable and will not direct viewers\n<ul>\n<li>Add links to your profile biography, or utilize a link-in-bio platform (CAS and other units use Linktree, a link-in-bio platform).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DO NOT post QR codes on social media content; they are not dynamic for most users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TURN OFF AUTO-POSTING from Instagram to Facebook:<ul><li>Cross-posting can break tags, handles, and locations. While Meta indicates that the two platforms are compatible with each other, there are hypertext issues that degrade the end-user experience.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Have platform-specific strategies for your social media content; reach out to <a href=\"mailto:cas.news@wsu.edu\">cas.news@wsu.edu<\/a> for questions on social media management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Video Captioning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Audio and video media are frequently used to deliver content digitally in web pages, presentations, social media, online textbooks, online courses, advertisements, virtual live events, etc. Audio only content needs transcripts. Videos with audio (pre-recorded and live) need captioning. Audio descriptions are also needed for videos that have meaningful information that is only provided visually and is not described\/supported by audio content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be accessible, video content must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Use .SRT files or other captioning files to synchronize the captions with the video\u2019s spoken audio content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure captions are correct if you use auto-generated captioning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure captions do not cover or interfere with visual content on-screen; captioning must be located in an appropriate location relative to video content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More information can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/digital-accessibility\/core-concepts\/audio-video\/\">Core Concepts: Audio and Video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section wsu-spacing-top--medium wsu-spacing-after--xxmedium wsu-spacing-bottom--small\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New: Descriptive Audio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>(from WSU Social Media Meet-up, March 25, 2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Descriptive audio is not captioning. It&#8217;s an additional audio channel describing what&#8217;s going on in the video\u200b. Audio descriptions can be created in two different formats: standard and extended.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard descriptive audio inserts a spoken description of what\u2019s on screen during any pause or break in spoken dialogue. \u200bStandard audio description does not alter the duration of the video and complies with the AA accessibility standard. \u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extended descriptive audio pauses the video and describes what the audience will see then plays the described portion of the video. It repeats this pattern until the video concludes, and this method extends the duration of your video.
