Carolyn Long, a professor in the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs at WSU Vancouver, received the inaugural Sam Reed Distinguished Professorship in Civic Education and Public Civility. The professorship honors Reed’s 45 years in public service, including 12 years as secretary of state.

Long works in the field of civics and promoting civility and will use the professorship to expand her work in Southwest Washington to help opposing groups with collaborative problem-solving through the Initiative for Public Deliberation.

Long was recognized in a ceremony in Olympia with Secretary of State Kim Wyman, former secretaries of state Sam Reed and Ralph Munro, and former WSU President Sam Smith.
