Vanessa Serratore (zoology ’08, DVM ’11) began researching the body temperature molting Monarch butterfly larvae for her undergraduate honors thesis while studying abroad in Australia. Working in collaboration with Patrick Carter, WSU associate professor in biological sciences, and Myron Zalucki of the University of Queensland, Serratore successfully completed a four-site research study while also completing her doctorate in veterinary medicine at WSU. The resulting paper was published in the February 2013 print issue of Australian Journal of Entomology and online in September.

Alumna Roxanne Reese has made it to the final round of the Marshall Scholarship selection process and is traveling this week for a personal interview at the British Consulate-General in San Francisco. She graduated with honors in May 2012 with BA degrees in philosophy and political science, minors in ethics and criminal justice, and a certificate of completion from the WSU Honors College. She held a WSU Distinguished Regents Scholarship throughout her undergraduate program.

“The entire WSU community is very pleased that Roxanne is but one step away from becoming the first WSU graduate to receive a Marshall Scholarship,” said Mary F. Wack, WSU vice provost for undergraduate education. “She is an accomplished scholar with well-defined career goals and she will be an excellent representative of our university and nation.”

The Marshall is one of a set of prestigious awards commonly known as “distinguished scholarships.” It was established in 1953 by the United Kingdom Parliament to provide funding for up to 40 exceptional American students each year who seek to pursue graduate education in the U.K.

Washington State University alumnus and art collector Dave Fitzsimmons owns three portraits by a former WSU art professor and wants help to discover who the subjects are.

Worth Griffin joined the staff of Washington State College (now WSU) in 1924, became chairman of the Fine Arts Department until 1950, and retired from WSU in 1958. His artistic abilities stretched to many mediums and styles, and he spent years painting scenes and portraits from the Northwest and Mexico.

Many of Griffin’s works are stored in the fine arts vault at WSU or are privately owned.

Findings from senior thesis published in Appetite journal

“The problem is no longer food scarcity, but too much food,” said Halley Morrison, a recent WSU biology graduate and author of an interdisciplinary Honors College senior thesis that was published in the journal Appetite.

Morrison, together with Tom Power, professor and chair of the human development department, analyzed more than 200 mother-child surveys and found that a mother’s eating habits and behavior at the dinner table can influence her preschooler’s obesity risk.
