Scope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This chapter covers the safety of CAS employees when using ladders. The requirements are governed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lni.wa.gov\/wisha\/rules\/LaddersPortableFixed\/default.htm\">Washington Administrative Code 296-876<\/a>, Portable and Fixed Ladders and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsu.edu\/manuals_forms\/HTML\/SPPM\/S30_Personal_Protective_Equipment\/S30.60_Elevated_Work_Safety.htm\"> WSU Safety Policy and Procedure Manual (SPPM) Chapter S3.34<\/a>, Elevated Work Safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C. Appendices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Appendix A &#8211; Ladder Inspection Checklist<\/li><li>Appendix B &#8211; Guidelines for Ladder Use<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">D. Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><u>Supervisors<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Ensure all employees that use ladders receive ladder safety training before performing work.<\/li><li>Enforce correct ladder.<\/li><li>Provide the correct ladder types for the intended application(s).<\/li><li>Ensure ladders are inspected when first placed into service, prior to every use, and immediately after potential damage from impact e.g., tip over, excessive heat or corrosive<\/li><li>Ensure ladders with defects are taken out of service Affix an out-of-service or do-not-use sign on the ladder and dispose as soon as possible.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><u>Employees<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Participate in training when<\/li><li>Select the appropriate portable ladder for the work<\/li><li>Maintain ladders in good, usable condition.<\/li><li>Inspect ladders before each use by using the inspection checklist (Appendix A).<\/li><li>Do not use defective ladders and take defective ladders out of service Report the observed defects to your supervisor.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">E. Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Training is provided to employees by the EHS Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit. Re-training is required when an employee exhibits inadequate knowledge, skill or understanding, or non-conforming use of ladders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Training will require participants to demonstrate an understanding of WAC 296-876 and a proficiency using ladders.
