Career Readiness Icons

This collection of icons is available for faculty to use in course materials, syllabi, presentations, and other instructional resources. The icons help students recognize and connect the Career Ready, World Ready competencies they are developing through their coursework to skills they will use beyond the classroom.

How to use the icons

  1. Download the ZIP file below and unzip the folder to your computer.
  2. Icons are organized into folders and are provided in two filetype options:
    • PNG – A common image format that can be used in most applications (Word, PowerPoint, WordPress, etc.)
    • SVG – Vector art used in design software. Icon color can be modified in Word and other design applications such as Illustrator (see below). May appear as a Chrome/Edge/Firefox HTML file.

Recommendations for use

  • Place icons before the core competency title and keep their size consistent.
  • Treat icons as decorative elements for digital accessibility.
  • Set the alternative text to empty (alt="") when using an icon on a web page.

To use in Microsoft Word

  1. Type the title of the core competency, then place your cursor before the title.
  2. On the ribbon, choose Insert > Pictures > This Device…
  3. Navigate to where you saved your files, select an icon, then click Insert.
  4. Click the icon and resize with the circular white handles. Alternatively, you can right-click > Size and Position
    (Set the size in inches. Example: Height = 0.15″ )
  5. Add a space (spacebar) after the icon.
  6. Important: This image needs to be marked as a decorative element for digital accessibility.
    1. Right-click the icon, choose View Alt Text…
    2. Check: Mark as decorative

Change the color of an SVG file in Microsoft Word

  1. Insert an SVG file using the steps in the previous section.
  2. Right-click the image and choose Format Graphic
  3. On the Format Graphic pane, choose Color > More colors…
  4. In the pop-up window, switch to the Custom tab
  5. Enter the values for a custom color, then click OK
    • Refer to the WSU Brand website for color values (WSU Crimson is listed below).
    • Be mindful of digital accessibility requirements for color contrast (most of our accent colors are too low contrast for a white background).
    • For print, use CMYK values; for screen, use Hexadecimal.
