The Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition will be presented free to the public at the Washington State University Museum of Art Aug. 12-Sept. 14. A reception will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, in the museum gallery.
The museum showcases the exhibition at the beginning of the school year so incoming students are immediately exposed to the manifold talents of the WSU fine arts faculty.
Enjoy music, art, food and dance during Humanitas! The free public festival, scheduled for October 3, 4, and 5, celebrates the world arts with performances and activities around the WSU-Pullman campus.
First-come, first-served evening concerts are scheduled for all three days of the festival; workshops and school outreach programs are scheduled for Friday; and Sunday’s free outdoor festival includes food, performances, a beer garden, and family-friendly art activities.
Thanks to a WSU grant, music professor and renowned oboist Keri McCarthy will travel to Burma later in July to deliver oboes to music students in Yangon, as part of a grassroots effort to build connections between the US and Burma. Oboes are virtually nonexistent in isolated Burma.
McCarthy plans to return to Burma in the spring to see how the oboes are being received, and will publish an article in a professional journal to encourage donations of oboes.

“9:00 am,” a recording featuring Washington State University jazz faculty members Brian Ward, piano, and Dave Hagelganz, tenor saxophone, was recently released on the peer-reviewed WSU Recordings label.
It is available on iTunes, Amazon mp3, Amazon On Demand, Spotify, Rhapsody and other websites. Compact discs are available from the WSU School of Music.
The recording features duo performances of beloved songs from the “Great American Songbook,” including Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Skylark,” Jimmy Van Huesen and Johnny Burke’s “It Could Happen To You” and jazz standards like Woody Shaw’s “Theme for Maxine” and Sam Rivers’ “Beatrice.” The recording is entitled “9:00 am” because that is the time the duo rehearsed.
A concert by the WSU Wind Ensemble on March 22 will feature the premiere of two compositions: the U.S. premiere of Francois Glorieux’s “Concerto for Euphonium,” and the world premiere of “Dark Matter: Petite Concertino for Tuba and Band” by Ben Kirby.
The concert will kickoff the 2013 Northwest Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference on the Washington State University campus. It is one of seven such regional conferences of the International Tuba Euphonium Association.
