Mathematics and Statistics

Thank you for your continued support of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Your contribution to this unrestricted fund plays a pivotal role in empowering our department to excel in academic pursuits, foster innovation, and provide unparalleled opportunities for our students, faculty, and staff. With your support, we can continue to make a lasting impact on education, research, and the overall experience of everyone within our community.

Thank you once again for your belief in our mission and for being an essential part of our journey towards excellence. Below are just a few examples of the work our excellence fund accomplished last year. We look forward to keeping you informed about the positive outcomes and achievements that your generosity helps us realize.

With sincere appreciation, GO COUGS!

  • Student Clubs: The Excellence Fund provides enhanced funding for our student clubs. This additional funding allows clubs to plan, organize, and run events of interest to the department. Recent activities organized by our clubs have included our department 3-minute thesis competition, a lecture by Dr. Sepideh Stewart of the University of Oklahoma, a workshop on data analysis for high school students, a workshop on R, a workshop on LaTex, and several department teas and other community building social gatherings.
  • Student travel: Future secondary and middle school math teachers traveled to the Northwest Mathematics Conference in Tacoma – a three-day event for K-12 teachers. Students travel to conferences to present their research: most recently, students have presented their work at the national meeting of the American Mathematical Society in Boston, the regional Mathematical Association of America annual meeting in Newburg, Oregon, and the Pacific Inland Undergraduate Mathematics Conference at Gonzaga.
  • Our department runs a statistics poster competition for local third through fifth graders. The excellence fund allows the department to provide book prizes for the top three. The fund also provides award certificates and plaques for department scholarship award recipients.
