Mental Health First Aid

Leading the way

Every year, the College of Arts and Sciences plays a vital role in supporting more than 8,000 students at a pivotal and often stressful time in their lives.

The CAS Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Initiative aims to:

  • Help faculty, staff, and students understand the nature, scope, and primary expressions of the mental health concerns facing WSU students.
  • Support the identification and implementation of evidence-based course designs, pedagogies, and advising methods that support student mental health.
  • Increase the capacity of faculty, staff, and students to recognize and respond to student mental health concerns.

To date, nearly 90 faculty, staff, and students have completed the formal Mental Health First Aid training coordinated through the Dean of Students. CAS is committed to continuing and expanding the MHFA initiative and increasing participation.

Training Opportunities

This fall, the college is organizing Mental Health First Aid Training opportunities and everyone is encouraged to sign up and complete the training course.

Thanks to the generous support of a donor, the Office of the Dean will be able to cover registration costs and offer a $150 completion award for up to 70 individuals—35 faculty or staff and 35 graduate students.
