Three Minute Thesis

2023 CAS 3MT Eligibility

The college competition is open to doctoral students only.

  • Doctoral students who are actively enrolled (and in good standing) in a doctoral program within the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible.
  • Doctoral students who are actively enrolled (and in good standing) in the Individual Interdisciplinary Doctoral Degree (IIDP) program should contact the home department of their committee chair to participate.
  • Applications will be reviewed first by the department chair or director, who will nominate students to present in the CAS 3MT competition.
  • Doctoral students at the Pullman campus must present in person during the CAS 3MT Competition on March 8, 2023. If a Pullman student wins the CAS 3MT Competition, they must participate in the WSU 3MT Competition on March 29, 2023.
  • Doctoral students at the Vancouver campus must present in person during their campus-wide 3MT competitions on February 24, 2023. The overall winner of the Vancouver campus 3MT Competition must compete in the University-level event on March 29, 2023 at 1pm in the Spark Atrium in Pullman.
  • Doctoral students at the Tri-Cities campus must present in person during their campus-wide 3MT competitions on March 8, 2023. The winner of the Tri-Cities campus 3MT Competition must compete in the University-level event on March 29, 2023 at 1pm in the Spark Atrium in Pullman.

Process and Deadlines

Pullman Participants

Doctoral students from the Pullman campus who are interested in participating must notify the chair or director of their doctoral program and electronically provide the completed application form and presentation slide to their chair or director by February 22, 2023.

Vancouver Participants

Doctoral students at WSU Vancouver must notify Holly Davis at holly.davis@wsu.edu by 9am on February 13, 2023, about their interest to participate in person in the WSUV campus-wide 3MT competition to be held on February 24, 2023. The winner will compete in the University-level event in Pullman as the WSUV winner via recording on March 29, 2023. See WSU Vancouver site for details.

Tri-Cities Participants

Doctoral students at WSU Tri-Cities must notify Niamh O’Leary at niamh.oleary@wsu.edu by March 2, 2023, about their interest to participate in the WSUTC campus-wide 3MT competition to be held on March 8, 2023. The winner will compete in the University-level event in Pullman as the WSUTC winner on March 29, 2023. 

Required Materials:

  • The completed application form which includes:
    • An abstract of the student’s thesis
    • An appropriate photo of the student for the CAS 3MT competition website
    • (Download the application form as a PDF or a Word document)
  • The single static PowerPoint slide that will be used in the CAS 3MT competition
