Placement Exams

ALEKS: Math Placement Assessment

With very few exceptions, all students new to WSU are required to complete the Math Placement Assessment to determine their readiness for various math courses.

Your results are available immediately after completing the assessment so you can be prepared for registration at your New Coug Orientation session.

Writing Placement Assessment

All incoming students who need to take a first-year writing course must complete the Writing Placement Assessment to determine which WSU course best fits their needs.

Placement results will be available in your MyWSU account approximately one week after the close date.

Learn more about the assessment process at the WSU Writing Program website.

Foreign Language Placement Assessment

Incoming students wishing to take any foreign language course in Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish past the first semester level (101), must take an assessment to be placed into the appropriate level language course before they can enroll.

Non-native speakers of these languages and heritage/native speakers of Spanish take the Avante online proctored placement exam to determine language level placement for courses at WSU.  Heritage speakers and native speakers of Chinese, French, German, and Japanese are encouraged to contact the Foreign Languages advisor to discuss placement by e-mail.

Your results are available within a few days after completing the exam.

Learn more about the language placement exam at the SLCR Foreign Language Placement Testing website.
