A New Chapter:

Welcome from the Interim Dean of WSU College of Arts & Sciences

June 18, 2024

On June 1, I began my two-year role as interim dean of the WSU College of Arts and Sciences. I have enjoyed getting to know many of you in my capacity as a faculty member for the past 17 years and as associate dean for research and graduate studies since 2018. I am honored to be able to serve our community in this expanded role.

The college is currently in our annual planning process. This happens in the wonderful space between having just sent new graduates into the world and preparing to welcome new students in the fall. It is within this interval that I like to consider exciting challenges we might tackle next.

As the cornerstone of any thriving university, a college of arts and sciences like ours fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a broad understanding of the world, equipping students with the skills needed to navigate and influence an ever-evolving global landscape.

Without a doubt, WSU has faced difficult headwinds in recent years, including budget reductions and lower student enrollment. While facing these challenges together, we have learned just how collaborative and resourceful the College of Arts and Sciences can be. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to academic excellence, we must reflect on the lessons we have learned and consider how we will respond to a changing world.

In this spirit, I look forward to engaging our community in conversations about the opportunities that lie just over the horizon. In addition to the innovative ideas that I know will surface from these discussions, I want to hear your thoughts on how we continue to eliminate barriers for first-generation students, improve equity and belonging in the college, expand student enrollment,  bolster faculty research—especially in areas that directly support our state economy—and enhance the rigorous, accessible, inclusive, hands-on, world-class education for which we are known.

I have always felt a strong connection to our students, faculty, colleagues, community partners, alumni, and supporters. I look forward to getting to know you even better and keeping you updated as we move forward, and I invite you to champion the college in years to come.

Please accept my warmest gratitude for your dedication and commitment to our work together.

Go Cougs,

Courtney Meehan's signture.
