Sergey Lapin, professor, career-track, in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Washington State University Everett, has been appointed to serve as director of the data analytics program within the College of Arts and Sciences, effective May 16, 2025. Data analytics is a multi-disciplinary field of study comprising mathematics, statistics, computer sciences, and the study of data itself.

“I am excited to work with my colleagues to expand opportunities in data analytics for our students, preparing them to bridge the gap between theory and practice,” said Lapin. “A key objective is to empower our graduates to contribute as skilled members and leaders of data analytics teams, ready to make an impact from day one.”

Lapin joined WSU in 2007. He is a Faculty Fellow at the WSU Honors College and was previously the Vice Chancellor for Research at WSU Everett.

“In response to the growing demand for skilled data analysts, the data analytics program offers students a comprehensive foundation in the tools and methodologies necessary to collect, manage, and analyze large and complex datasets across a wide range of professional sectors,” said Interim Dean Courtney Meehan. “Dr. Lapin will bring his passion for mentorship and facilitate a program that approaches real-world problems.”

Lapin’s work focuses on scientific computing, mathematical biology, and data analytics, with recent projects exploring cardiovascular and retinal dynamics. He’s received multiple awards for teaching and leadership, including most recently, the WSU President’s Award for Leadership (2023) and the WSU College of Arts and Sciences Interdisciplinary Catalyst Award (2023).

Lapin is also involved with projects and collaborations around the world, including ongoing research with colleagues in France on mathematical modeling of cardiovascular and ocular hemodynamics and joint data analytics research on international tourism with a colleague in Uzbekistan. He also has taught summer courses in China and Denmark and is a co-recipient of a National Science Foundation’s International Research Experiences for Students grant to launch a student exchange program with Linköping University, Sweden.

Lapin earned his PhD in applied mathematics at the University of Houston in 2005. He succeeds Nairanjana (Jan) Dasgupta, chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, who held the position from January 2020 to May 2025.
