New leaders appointed in CAS
Several academic units in our college are welcoming new leadership this fall.
School of the Environment
In June, Larry Hufford, professor of biological sciences, began serving as interim director. Although he continues also to serve as director of the School of Biological Sciences, his extensive leadership experience with complex academic and research units will help provide a smooth transition to the next leader.
Department of Critical Cultures, Gender, and Race Studies
In July, Ana Maria Rodriguez-Vivaldi, associate dean and associate professor of Spanish, began serving as the department’s point of contact for student, faculty, curriculum, and budget responsibilities while leadership options are discussed.
Department of Chemistry
In August, Kirk Peterson, professor of chemistry, began his first term as department chair.
Department of Fine Arts
Also in August, Squeak Meisel, associate professor and sculpture coordinator, began serving as interim chair for the department.

Department of Physics and Astronomy
On February 1, 2017, Brian Saam, professor of physics at the University of Utah, will begin his tenure at WSU as chair of the department. Until then, Sukanta Bose, professor of physics, will serve as interim chair.
Office of the Dean
Additionally in August, Amy Wharton, professor of sociology and director of the College of Art and Sciences at WSU Vancouver, began serving also as associate dean and academic director for the College of Arts and Sciences overall. She will work with the CAS community to build connections and collaborative activities across the WSU system.
